Private Lessons

In Person or on the web! I’m now teaching regularly in Tucson, AZ. More convenient that Yuma was for sure, but, I know it is a bit inconvenient for many of you, SO you can also take lesson by Webcam.
Here or there. In town? Call or email and we’ll set up an in person session or two.

Not near here, can’t find a teacher in your area? I’m not coming to your town? Don’t fret - go to the web! We can make it happen one on one by webcam. I use both Google Video Chat and Skype to teach you in person and at your convenience in the comfort of your own home.

June 11th to 14th, 2017

All day each day!

BE the band! Old Time style At CBA Camp at Grass Valley.

All instruments are welcome but old time music is the key. Usually an old time string band consists of fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and occasionally mandolin, harmonica and a few others. Banjo players should be old time (clawhammer or fingerstyle) style players.

Join Dan of The Boiled Buzzards Old Time Stringband as we build your stringband repertoire and work on your skills at playing nice with others. We will primarily concentrate on instrumental selections BUT we could do some vocal pieces if the skills allow. Each morning we may take some time to break into instrument by sections to learn and work on the tunes of the day while honing your playing skills. Everything from dynamics to performance techniques will be covered as we go from individual to group.

Intermediate and above players welcome!

Prerequisite(s): Understanding of Old Time String Band music is helpful here. It is not bluegrass, but is not as narrow as you might think. Students should come in with playing knowledge of their instrument and be able to play several tunes in the regular string band keys of A, D, C and G.

This event leads up to CBA’s famous Grass Valley Fathers’ Day Festival

The Dark Side of Old-Time Music - Come for the eclipse, stay for the music!

It’s a total solar eclipse that morning starting at about 10:15 am and lasting for 160 seconds in totality, so Keta thought what better way to be in Corvallis, OR to watch it from the shop! I thought what a great way to explore the Dark Side! Well old time music in any case so plan is for a Clawhammer Banjo Workshop (Say 11 - 1) an Old Time Fiddle workshop (2-4?) and an evening concert with Dan Levenson in a musical conversation of melodies, songs and stories and hey, perhaps even a Jam after.

Details are still in the formation stage so feel free to chime in with suggestions and interest. Best way is by email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and let me know.

A Day With Dan!

Okay folks, the schedule is coming together.

11 AM - 1 PM Clawhammer Banjo Workshop

3 - 5 PMFiddle Workshop

7:30 Concert - An Evening with Dan Levenson - An intimate evening of musical conversation  Dan’s one man show with Clawhammer Banjo, Appalachian Fiddle, songs and stories of life and the road.

Dan Levenson has been a musician most all of his life so far. He was born to and raised in a musical family where his father called square dances and his mother sang and played piano and guitar. Dan’s parents even met at a square dance themselves. This evening you hear his story told of and through music. More than one story actually, and about more than one person. It is the stories of folk music, of growing up, of travel and life on the road. It is Dan’s story but is also at once your story. It is history and entertainment; education and art; friends and family; school, work, life and play.

With the banjo and fiddle, stories and songs Dan tells of growing up with the music of the United States. Of learning what it means to have music a part of life and meet the people throughout this nation and others who share that music. Many who attend may have similar stories. Your parents or grandparents may have played this music. Indeed many of you DO play music though few have gotten as carried away as Dan has over the years. Players and listeners will love it just the same and are the most important component of the music that built this nation. Read more… Admission will be on a sliding scale $15 to $25 at the door.

Workshops will be aimed at the Intermediate to Advanced level. - $40 each, $70 for both.

Workshops at 1 and 3; Potluck at 5; Concert at 7

A Day with Dan at Barbara’s Place!

1 PM - Old Time Fiddle Workshop: Fiddle is fascinating and one of the most versatile instruments in the old time world. Old time is a style in and of itself defined by and differentiated from other styles by its bowing, varied tunings and melodic interpretation. We will focus on how they old folks played and work to compare old styles to the current trends in Old Time Music.  $30

3 PM - Clawhammer Banjo Workshop: “Double thumb, drop thumb, bump a diddy, bum diddy, 2 o’clock, 10’oclock” What does it all mean and how do I do it? We dissect the tools needed to play the clawhammer banjo style and apply it to music of yesterday and today. Who are those old masters and how would they sound today and how do you fit in the mix.  $30

Take both workshops for $50 to get a $10 discount!

5 PM - Potluck dinner - Barbara’s potlucks are famous for great food and a wonderful sense of friendship and camaraderie. Bring your best and add it to the mix!

7 PM - An Evening with Dan Levenson - An intimate evening of musical conversation – Dan’s one man show with Clawhammer Banjo, Appalachian Fiddle, songs and stories of life and the road.
